So after seeing some good reviews on this set, I went with an Amazon Open Box discount. The dive back into ATH world has been successful.
I would like to point out that I am middle aged. My hearing isn’t as good as many of you, and while I am certainly not deaf, I find that I have gotten close to my limits with aural resolution. I had a fairly nice setup up with much more expensive headphones, DAC/Amp and so on, but it occurred to me that I couldn’t tell much difference from midpriced phones. I sold the expensive ones and am mucking around here, in the 150-200 range. It seems a sweet spot for my level of hearing ability and investment. Many headphones at this price point are easy to drive and don’t require super fancy DAC/amps to “make them shine.” I really think that phrase is overused at HeadFi.
When bothering to compare, my references are the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro (80 Hz) and Senn 598. Honestly, I don’t hear a huge difference between the Beyers and the ATH. There is is definitely a brighter sound in the mids of the ATH, and they don’t feel as forward as the Beyers to me. These are mostly less warm than the Senns, so there are times when classical music on the MSR7 sounds a little harsh to me, though it really depends...
The fun surprise to me is that old music sounds new - I think in stuff that was mastered to CD 20 years ago, bass was done with a lighter touch, and maybe some mixes were a little muddier than we find today. With a little brighter sound and deeper bass, the ATH really punches up older tunes: Doobie Brothers sound fantastic, Chicago’s Mongonucleosis rocks again. The bass is WAY better controlled on the MSR7s than the M50. The ginormous surprise here was Michael Jackson’s “Black or White,” which never crossed over to gushy bass lines or brittle guitar. The gorgeously mixed "Love" from the Beatles Cirque album sounds splendid. But then it does on almost anything.
Once in a great while bass still penetrates a little too deep for me, seemingly with jazz. “Caravan” from Whiplash sounded unnatural, and Maynard Ferguson's fusion didn’t benefit. Quartet level jazz did though. Zoot Sims sounded pretty tight. With a not great Don Byas recording, I felt like I was able to penetrate into a very old mix.
With soundtracks like the title track for Finding Nemo, full of little ambient sounds, I could’t ask for more. Vocal soundtracks were hit and miss. Some tenor voices (Les Miz) bordered on harsh.
Classical still sounds better to me with an open headphone like the 598. If there is lots of little detail and some intimacy (The Turkish March in Beethoven’s 9th) these can’t be beat. The discriminatory ability of these headphones reveals little gems so often that you have to smile.
Overall, I think these are wonderful mid priced headphones that finally make the ATH signature satisfying rather than frustrating. They are fun sounding without being sloppy, particularly for music with a lot of movement or detail going on as they allow the music to sort out rather than mash together. For older music, they freshen the mix, so for us older guys, they are a great choice. I think as an overall go-to headphone, they are an excellent choice, easily driven by a portable device.
It comes with a selection of cords. I didn’t use the inline mic. The desktop cord is thin and cheap feeling. It also didn’t come with a 1/4 inch adapter. Oh well.
It seems well made and sturdy enough, but I use it for desktop purposes only. Clamping force is a little strong, and my head isn't large. But the ear cushions make up for this, and I haven't had any real trouble with extended listening.
The open box item was in excellent condition. The only thing that looked out of place at all was the cord which kinda looked like a kid re-rolled it. Beyond that, no blemishes, etc. Well worth a price 80 bucks off the list.
so, if you are a bass head, these headphones are not for you. that being said, some people say bass is lacking. in my opinion, its just about right. its present, but not overwhelming. i listened to plenty of rap songs like Kid Ink- Body Language, Lloyd Banks- Beamer Benz or Bentley, and Lil Jon & DJ Snake- Turn Down for What.. keeping in mind that all these tracks put alot of emphasis on bass.. and to me it was still music to my ears.
where these headphones really shine is clarity. vocals, acoustics, guitars and drums are very very clean. watching movies is a real treat too. voices come out very clear.
my only complaint with these headphones are the band over the top of the head is a bit on the tighter side. some may say thats better for a more secure fit, maybe over time that will break in a bit, not a deal breaker for me. listening to these headphones at high volume is probably not recommended. i noticed after 2 hours of use, i feel like my ears get fatigued, and i need to give it a moment to breathe. so if you're the type that want to wear these headphones for a long period of time, maybe its best to have it at medium-high volume level instead of max. but again, that might just be me. these headphones are probably best bang for your buck.
other items i considered was the sennheiser momentum 2.0, and the bose qc 25. i didn't get a chance to try both because i wanted something a little bit more budget friendly. im sure they sound great too, but if you are up on the fence about buying these, i don't think anyone will be disappointed with the sound. alot of people also want to know how these headphones stack up against the very budget friendly m50x.
in my opinion, the msr7 clarity, treble and mids are better. not by much, but definitely noticeable. the bass is a tad more present in the m50x. again, not by much.. but you can tell. i use this for travel/flights.. and to my friends that are nearby says it has very little or no sound leakage which may be something to consider for some who care about that sort of thing. both are extremely light headphones, the m50x a tad lighter since it is made up of mostly, if not all plastic. the msr7 has some metal construction to it which adds a little bit more heft, but to me it adds a more premium feel and a much more classy and public friendly look when wearing it.
Once they are on, noise isolation is OK. With music off, they are so-so. Funny, I laughed at the other reviewer that said he felt that the noise was amplified with these headphones. But, he's not far off. Not saying they amplify the noise. But the muffled sounds feel more present. To me anyway. And apparently to the other reviewer.
I have a big head and I don't feel the clamping pressure others have mentioned. I've worn them right out of the box for an hr+ and they fit good. Ear cups could be a little deeper, but nothing some aftermarket parts can't fix.
I have the black set and they look as good as they sound. Solid construction. Great trim coloring. Just overall A+ attention to designing these headphones.
It comes with 3 cables and a crappy bag. And that's where the 4 star review comes in. At this price point and considering they are labeled as portable, Audio-Technica needs to mean it and include a case. No excuse around it. It's just annoying to have that bag. It serves its purpose at home. But that's about it. Out and about, the superb headphones will definitely get beaten up. And why Audio-Technica, why?! Why design such nice headsets with awesome color schemes and not protect them?!
Other than my annoyance Haha, great purchase. Wait for a sale as they sometimes drop 20$-30$. You'll need that to buy a case for these darn things (OK I'm done talking about the case. *think happy thoughts*). The sound is amazing. They look amazing. You won't regret the purchase.
... Except no case. :P

Quindi senza dubbio compratele e sarete contenti.
